Good Book!
Terriffic book for anyone!
Terrific to see this series come back !!!

Play like Barry!!When I say that you can "play like Barry", I mean it. The Brothers have presented us with their well-remembered hits of their collection, and for each hit includes piano and guitar chords. Now, for any guitarist like me you're lucky to have illustrated guitar chords--not just the abbreviations and symbols. I love it when I play my accoustic guitar while going along with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"--sounds just like Barry's guitar playing!! The layout of the music is just flawless and unsurpassable.
And, finally, in the "About the Songs" section of the book, I love relooking at the descriptions of the Bee Gees' hits, where Barry, Robin and the never-forgotten Maurice Gibb made comments. The descriptions give you plenty of detail and I always learn something new reading them--for instance, Robin describes how the UK hit "My World" surprisingly became a hit--that motivates me on their music. What I'm trying to tell you is that the descriptions aren't like: "Yes, a great song indeed" and that's it. Not really.. For example, Barry's description of Stayin' Alive blew me away saying "Light fuse and stand well back"--like it was some explosive piece of music. That section just captivates my attention, and makes me replay their music.
This is one ultimate book that makes you play their hits without trouble! You're definitely missing out on this inspiring book if you don't think about buying it!! Believe me, it's worth your every penny.

My favorite of all Tori's songbooks
My favorite Tori piano bookReading through, this is Tori's most difficult piano book that I have (I have the anthology, Under The Pink, Boys For Pele, and this), but once you get the flow for each song, it comes naturally. A lot of the songs have a different personality from her album songs, which is why some Tori fans end up liking her b-sides more than most of her other stuff. My particular favorites from this book to play are "Here. In My Head", "Butterfly", "Sister Janet", "Black Swan", and "Honey". They all sound beautiful with just the piano, even with no singing. "Ode To The Banana King" is fun to play too. I've finally heard all of those songs, but for a while I was playing them without having heard them and they're still great when you don't know how Tori plays and sings them.
Not only are most of the songs in this book great, but the transcriptions are some of my favorites from the four books I have of hers. Some of those are really poorly transcribed, some of it because they feel the need to incorporate the melody into the piano part, and other times they just skip on stuff they put, like the intros to Mother and Icicle in their respective books, and they simplify the remaining piano parts. But the ones I've heard of these, which by now is almost all of them, aren't missing much and are very fun and beautiful to play.
A big problem I have with the book is a few of the songs are already in the Tori Anthology. While I understand this for the album songs that are in the anthology, Tori has come out with a ton more b-sides that haven't been in anything, like Graveyard and Frog On My Toe. And why include Song For Eric, which is a capella, in a piano book? There's no piano music for it. But oh well, it's just a page anyway. But songs that are in both this book and the anthology are "Honey", "Take To The Sky", "Sweet Dreams", "Mary", "Etienne", and "Baltimore", which is pretty disappointing considering that's a big chunk of the book (and those are some of the least fun to play without voice in the book, excluding Honey.. wonder why they chose those for the anthology). But still, I think it's worth getting this book if you already have the Anthology for those other songs that aren't in it. And with the To Venus And Back book, which comes with the live CD songs too, you get some more b-sides which aren't included in this, like Purple People and Cooling. very cool. I'm gonna get that one next, hehe. Now I just want Upside Down without having to buy the whole Little Earthquakes book. :(
So yeah, this is a very good piano book.
i like

Dear Ellen Bee

A HONEY OF A BOOKFollowing a divorce Ms. Thomas, her then 7-year-old daughter, August, and Ruffy, a geriatric cat, sought new life in a small New England community populated by 3,000 inquisitive souls.
There she met Farmer Tom; farmer being an unlikely sobriquet for a man with clean fingernails and a business card. Another unlikelihood was Ms. Thomas's out-of-nowhere comment that she might like to keep bees. At this, her daughter smiled, and Farmer Tom offered his land.
Smitten with the idea of having a mother who was a bee keeper, August "danced jubilantly about the house, composing beekeeping songs, drawing beekeeping pictures." Not wishing to disappoint her daughter, and just a little enthralled by the idea herself, Ms. Thomas began a task about which she knew "a teaspoonful more than absolutely nothing."
She visited a master beekeeper who introduced her to a hive body or deep super where bees live. Inside the deep super would be wax covered moveable frames where honey is made. . To her chagrin these did not come ready made, but had to be assembled - a daunting task for one who was not sure she owned a hammer. She bought three unassembled hives.
Another necessity was "The Outfit," first of all, gloves, elbow length cotton covered with yellow latex. Gloves did not come in a 7 ½; the smallest size in the white beesuit was a men's 42 regular. Finally, the hat. She was hoping for something in "a pale gold closely woven straw." Instead, she was handed "a hard white plastic pith helmet with ventilation grates at the temples."
There was no time for second thoughts as she had also ordered six living pounds of Italian honeybees. (According to the Bee Master Italian honeybees had the best dispositions). After many bruised fingers, considerable help from a friend, and countless visits to True Value, the hives were ready. Named Har, Jafenhar, and Thridi for the mythic trio who guard Valhalla, they were placed on Farmer Tom's land.
Weeks passed as Ms. Thomas tended her bees, sloshing through the field in Wellingtons bearing Ball jars of sugar water and toting other necessities in a lavender Bergdorf's shopping bag. With each visit she felt a deepening affinity for that spot of earth. Her respect for the natural world grew as she observed a blue heron seeking sustenance, and heavily laden black ants climbing ant mountains.
After a year the author had survived numerous stings and slings of fortune. She harvested her first crop with the observation that she had learned much but not enough.
Readers will find that they have learned much about bee keeping but not enough about Rosanne Daryl Thomas. "Beeing" is a memoir oddly lacking in emotional intimacy. Her marriage is dismissed with several lines, and there is scant reference to personal feelings. As "Motherhood" is found in the subtitle, one wonders what August's response was to the breakup of her home, and moving to a new community. Did Ms. Thomas ever address these issues with her daughter?
Practical matters also prove puzzling. With no apparent income how does one undertake a costly hobby that requires full time attention? Questions remain unanswered.
Nonetheless, "Being" is fluidly penned, at times lyric in descriptions of the changing seasons. And, there are lessons to be learned in this memoir, not the least of which is, "If you want to get honey, you have to be prepared to get stung."
There's no question at all about that.

Completely Charmed by BEEINGand completely charming. (also inspiring: makes you
want to keep bees and appreciate them more.)
This is a "keeper" for the personal favorites library.
It is the gift I want to give my favorite friends and
